From Sketch to Finish Vol. 1

This will be an ongoing set of blogs exploring how I get an idea from paper to product.

The chassis for the AMETRIX Model 100 Series Picoammeter started in 2010 and produced hundreds of sketches and physical models. We defined it could only have four external screws to securely attach three pieces of powder-coated aluminum. By 2011 I did it.

And the final product.

This was an odd one. For many years, IOtech did the December holiday-themed cover for Evaluation Engineering Magazine, until 2007. We had some company changes and had forgotten the hallmark opportunity.

At the end of November, I remembered. We doubted there was still time to submit a concept to our time-honored tradition, but a walk around the building inspired the idea for the "North Pole Test Labs" cover. Within 10 minutes I had the sketch emailed to the Senior Editor at EE Magazine with implied areas for their headlines. We got lucky.

Very coincidently, the cover the magazine was expecting was going to be terminally delayed and we had two days to produce a cover on-site with an old Canon A95.

And the final product...

Here's a few sketches that led to two versions of a redesigned The Bee Gees' logo in the Scandinavian Black Metal style. I didn't know much about the project at the time. It led to screen prints and ultimately to this blog entry that may shed light on the controversy:
